Second-ranked Gonzaga Prep wasted little time in dispatching Auburn in
the first round of the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament
Wednesday morning at the Tacoma Dome.
The Bullpups surged to an 18-point halftime lead and added to it
in the second half, winning 65-33.
Gonzaga Prep (24-2), winner of the Eastern Regional, was not
affected by the 9 a.m. tip-off, or the cavernous shooting
environment, making 54.7 percent of its shots from the floor.
“It was real early when we got that knock on our door to wake up
at 5:30 a.m.,” forward Ryan Nicholas said. “But now we get a whole
day to rest our bodies and play at 3 o’clock tomorrow.”
The Bullpups will play the winner of No. 1 Federal Way-Stanwood
at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Auburn (16-10) will play the loser at 9
a.m.
Guard Chris Sarbaugh scored a game-high 19 points for the
Bullpups. Guard David Nelson had 12 and Nicholas finished with 10.
Trojans coach Ryan Hansen credited Gonzaga Prep’s defense for
holding his team to a season-low 33 points.
“It was an ugly game,” Hansen said. “We certainly didn’t shoot
the ball well.” Kevin Henderson led Auburn with 12 points, going
4-for-21 from the floor.
